A beautiful Provençal Mansion dating back to the mid 16th Century located on the Grand Rue in this historic village. The facade of the house has recently been restored according to the rules of Maisons de France and its traditional methods. There was wide publication in the local newspapers of this restoration. It is believed that Louis XIV visited the house on his way to the Notre Dame de Grace.

Fractional ownership arrangements

Location & History

Cotignac lies in the department Var in the heart of Provence below a magnificent rock. The villagers would find shelter in this rock when attacked by Saracens or other foes and until right into the Second World War the “Rocher” provided a safe heaven for men and their animals. The living quarters in the rock are still there to visit and you will immediately recognize the kitchen: the same one as yours in the Grand Rue no. 7.

Long before even the Middle Ages these caves were inhabited and the village of Cotignac was slowly build around what is now the Place de la Mairie and her watch tower (XV century). The little streets around it, like the Grand Rue formed initially the core of the village.

It is a warm, lively and multicultural village with activities all year including concerts, lectures and exhibitions. Through the centuries it has attracted artists and writers who became inspired by its calm and beautiful valley. The surroundings are typical of Provence with its oliviers, vineyards, weather beaten little cottages, beautiful home farms and fields of lavender. The heart of the village is now the Course Gambetta, the famous 'Cours', where the old platanes give enough shadow in the summer to enjoy your Pastis, ballon Rose or Blanc or café au lait and where you can even sit comfortable sheltered by the old houses in winter time.

You will hear the sound of water splashing everywhere because of the 18 fountains and it accompanies the visitor on his way through the narrow little streets and gateways, along the exquisite wooden doors and the old houses, lovingly and harmoniously restored to their former glory. The Tuesday market offers a choice of local products and delicacies like truffles, cheeses, honey, ham, sausages etc.
